How this calculator works

Mental math at the table is how everyone ends up overpaying or awkwardly short. This tip calculator does the whole job: enter the bill, pick your tip percentage and the number of people splitting, and it shows the tip amount, the total with tip and each person's share. No app download, no account, just the answer.

A quick etiquette guide for the percentages: 15% is the floor for adequate table service in the US, 18–20% is the standard for good service, and 20–25%+ is for exceptional service or large parties that made the server work. Tip on the pre-tax subtotal, not the tax-included total, and tip in cash when you can so the server keeps all of it. For delivery, 15–20% with a $3–5 minimum respects the driver's time and vehicle costs. Splitting evenly is simplest; if someone ordered far more, settle the difference between yourselves rather than itemizing at the register.

Frequently asked questions

What is a standard tip percentage?
In the US, 18–20% for good restaurant service, 15% minimum for adequate service, 20–25%+ for exceptional service.
Do you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Pre-tax subtotal is the standard. Tipping on the tax-included total slightly over-tips.
How do you split a bill evenly?
Add the tip to the bill total, then divide by the number of people. Our calculator does it in one step.
How much should I tip for delivery?
15–20% with a $3–5 minimum is fair, accounting for the driver's time, gas and vehicle wear.
