How this calculator works

Most people know their salary and their bank balance, but the journey between the two is a blur of deductions, taxes and auto-payments. This paycheck breakdown calculator makes it visible in two steps. First it estimates your net pay: gross minus pre-tax deductions (401(k), HSA), minus a flat estimated tax rate, minus post-tax deductions like insurance premiums. Then you allocate that net pay across bills, savings, debt payments and spending money, and it shows each slice as a percentage plus whatever is left unallocated.

The unallocated number is the diagnostic. Positive means money is leaking somewhere untracked, give it a job (usually more savings). Negative means you are budgeting more than you earn, which is how credit card balances quietly grow; cut spending or bills until it hits zero. The percentages reveal your real priorities versus your stated ones: if "spending money" dwarfs savings, no budgeting app will fix what the allocation exposes. Run it per paycheck rather than monthly if you are paid biweekly, the two-extra-paychecks months become visible bonuses instead of mystery money.

Frequently asked questions

How is net pay different from gross pay?
Gross is your salary before anything is taken out. Net (take-home) is what remains after taxes, retirement contributions, insurance and other deductions.
What are pre-tax vs post-tax deductions?
Pre-tax deductions (401(k), HSA, some insurance) reduce your taxable income. Post-tax deductions (Roth 401(k), most insurance premiums, union dues) come out after taxes.
What should I do with unallocated money?
Give it a job: usually extra savings or debt payoff. Unallocated money tends to get spent without you noticing.
What if my allocation exceeds my net pay?
You are overspending by that amount, likely funded by savings or credit. Reduce spending or bills until allocations fit inside net pay.
